About Flex Print
Flex printing (also heat-transfer vinyl, HTV) is a transfer process in which a flexible single-colour polyurethane film (PU flex film) is contour-cut on a cutting plotter and then pressed onto the textile under a heat press at 150-170 °C. The method has been the standard for sports jerseys, player names and back numbers since the 1980s and is FIFA/UEFA-compliant for official club apparel.
Facts:
- Origin: commercial establishment from ~1980s
- Print principle: PU flex film + plotter cut (contours) + weeding + heat-press transfer
- Look/feel: thin, smooth solid-colour surface; matte or glossy variants
- Durability: 30-50 wash cycles at 30-40 °C
- Materials: cotton, blends, polyester (incl. functional fabrics and sports jerseys)
- Wikipedia: Heat transfer vinyl (en.wikipedia.org)
- Film manufacturers: Poli-Tape PoliFlex · Stahls' CAD-CUT
- Sport standards: FIFA Quality Programme (player names and back numbers)

What is flex print?
Flex print is a vinyl transfer method. A thin, single-colour polyurethane film with an adhesive layer is cut on a cutting plotter mirror-inverted along the vector outlines. The unwanted vinyl scraps are then weeded by hand — the negative is peeled away, the actual motif remains stuck to the carrier sheet. This carrier sheet is placed onto the textile and fixed to the fibre with a heat press at around 150 °C under pressure for between 8 and 15 seconds. After cooling, the carrier sheet is peeled off and the motif remains permanently on the fabric.
The decisive advantage: flex print is mechanically robust, easily survives many washes and delivers brilliant, luminous solid colours — even on polyester and functional textiles where classic screen print would struggle. The downside: each colour requires its own film and its own press cycle, so gradients and photo motifs are not possible. Economically sensible are one to a maximum of three colours per design.
When is flex print worthwhile?
Flex print is the most economical choice whenever the design consists of clearly demarcated solid colours and the quantity is small to medium. The method is suitable for:
- Fabrics — cotton, blends, polyester, functional fabrics like Cool-Plus or jersey material. Stretch sports fabrics work with special stretch-flex film.
- Designs — player names, back numbers, simple logos, lettering, single-colour club crests with clear outlines. No photos, no gradients.
- Quantities — from 1 piece, ideal up to about 100 pieces. For larger runs with identical designs, screen print or DTF becomes cheaper.
- Applications — jersey numbers, player name back prints, marathon running shirts with bib number, volleyball jerseys, club logos on functional shirts.
If your design has more than three colours or contains a photo, DTF print is the better choice. For a refined look with a velvety feel, we recommend flock print instead.
Benefits and limits of flex print
Benefits:
- From 1 piece — no setup costs, ideal for individual pieces and reorders.
- Brilliant solid colours — luminous results, also on dark jerseys.
- Good durability — around 50 washes without visible wear with proper care.
- Works on polyester — unlike screen print with standard inks.
- Very sharp outlines — perfect for letters, numbers and fine lettering.
Limits:
- No gradients or photos — only solid colour areas per film.
- Maximum 2-3 colours economically — each colour needs its own film and press cycle.
- Vinyl feel — the film is slightly noticeable and feels different from the fabric.
- Not for very fine detail motifs below 2 millimetres line width.
Minimum quantity and prices
Flex print is economical from the very first piece, since no setup costs apply. The following indication shows typical unit prices depending on vinyl area and application.
| Application | Vinyl area | Unit price (indication) |
|---|---|---|
| Single letter or digit (player name, number) | small | EUR 0.80-2.00 per piece |
| Small logo or chest lettering | up to A5 | EUR 3-5 per piece |
| Large front or back motif | up to A4 | EUR 5-8 per piece |
| Player name (lettering above) plus back number | combined | EUR 6-10 per jersey |
| Two-colour logo | up to A5 | EUR 5-9 per piece |
*Indicative prices for one vinyl colour and standard flex film. Speciality films (reflective, glitter, stretch flex) carry a small surcharge. Final prices depend on fabric, print area and number of films. Please request a specific quote via the enquiry form.
