Westford Mill Organic Cotton Bags Printed — GOTS Organic, EarthAware and Recycled Cotton for Eco-Promo

Westford Mill is the British eco-bag specialist with two documented organic lines: GOTS-certified EarthAware Organic Bag (W801) and Recycled Cotton (W210). The standard Bag for Life W101 is conventional cotton. We print all three with eco-brand logos from 25 pieces — screen print (from 100 pieces), embroidery or DTG. Unit price from €2.90 net for the W101.

You run a climate NGO, organise a conference with sustainability ambition or operate an organic farm shop with a reusable-bag concept? Westford Mill is the eco-bag brand where real organic supply chain and pricing economics work simultaneously. This page explains the three organic models, the difference between GOTS organic, EarthAware organic and recycled cotton, and the print methods and volume tiers.

Westford Mill profile — the eco-bag specialist

Westford Mill belongs to the British Beechfield Group (sister brands: BagBase, Quadra) and is the sustainable bag brand within the trio. HQ: Manchester, founded 1997. Material positioning: natural fibre (cotton, jute, recycled cotton) instead of polyester — the direct contrast to the polyester world of the sister brands. Range depth: over 80 eco-bag models, three core lines for 90 % of all eco-promo orders: the W101 Bag for Life (conventional cotton), the W801 EarthAware (GOTS organic cotton) and the W210 Heavy Cotton (recycled-cotton variant).

In the European eco segment, Westford Mill is the typical choice for organic farm shops, climate NGOs, conference organisers with sustainability ambition, B-Corps and sustainable fashion labels. The brand story documents a BSCI / Sedex-audited supply chain in India and Bangladesh — the audit reports are publicly available in the Westford Mill sustainability portal.

W101 Bag for Life — the robust standard tote

The W101 Bag for Life is the most-ordered Westford Mill tote in DACH. 38 × 42 × 10 cm format, 12 litres volume, 170 gsm conventional cotton (so not GOTS organic — important for the brief), with short carry handles (38 cm height) for the shoulder-carry variant. Load capacity up to eight kilograms (typically two organic-market shopping trips or a weekend shop). 17 colours — from natural, black, navy to pastel variants and lime green for organic-market branding.

Typical use case: organic farm shop with customer reusable-bag concept (typically 100–300 pieces per year with shop logo), conference goody-bag container (200–500 pieces per event with conference logo), climate-activism promo (NGO with t-shirt-and-tote pack), organic bakery or butcher with bread-bag variant.

Important for the brief: W101 is conventional cotton — if your eco claim is "organic" or "GOTS", switch to the W801 EarthAware. If your claim is "robust reusable bag", W101 is sufficient.

W801 EarthAware Organic — the GOTS-certified organic variant

The W801 EarthAware Organic Bag is the GOTS-certified organic variant. 38 × 42 × 10 cm format identical to the W101, but made from 100 % certified organic cotton (GOTS, Global Organic Textile Standard). The GOTS certificate number sits on every hangtag, the audit reports are publicly available in the Westford Mill portal. Fabric composition 170 gsm, load capacity up to eight kilograms.

12 colours — the organic-cotton dyeing allows softer tones (natural, indigo, navy, cream yellow, pastel variants). Very bright colours (neon, hi-vis) are not possible in organic because the GOTS certification excludes certain reactive dyes — if the branding requires bright colours, switch to the W101 (conventional) or W210 (recycled cotton with broader colour spectrum).

Typical use case: B-Corp company with GOTS requirement in CSR communications guideline (200–800 pieces per year as employee or customer gift), climate NGO with "organic certified" brand claim (100–500 pieces as member welcome pack), GreenTech start-up with eco branding promise (50–300 pieces as founder kit or conference pack), sustainable fashion label with GOTS organic line.

    W210 Heavy Cotton — the recycled-cotton variant

The W210 Heavy Cotton Bag is the recycled-cotton variant. 38 × 42 × 12 cm format slightly larger than W101 / W801, 310 gsm recycled cotton (significantly heavier and more robust) from post-industrial recycling (textile fibre off-cuts from apparel production, not from used t-shirts). Load capacity up to 15 kilograms — so for heavy organic-market shopping or a conference goody bag with tablet plus notebook plus materials.

10 colours in stronger optics than the GOTS organic line (bottle green, burgundy, indigo blue, black, cream, hi-vis yellow, lime, magenta, orange, stone grey). Recycled cotton tolerates more dyeing variability than GOTS organic because the recycling process already processes pre-dyed fibre off-cuts (so end-finishing dyeing is less strict).

Typical use case: premium conference goody bag (with tablet change need), festival crew pack (more robust than W101), heavy organic-market shopping, branding bag for outdoor events with long carry load. Eco story: recycled cotton saves 90 % of the water consumption compared to new cotton (CO₂ saving documented via Westford Mill LCA report).

Print methods on organic cotton bags

Which print method on which Westford Mill variant? Rule of thumb: screen print for volume and Pantone match, embroidery for premium eco image, DTG for small runs with photo motifs, DTF for bachelor and custom small runs.

Screen print — the most economical method from 100 pieces

Screen print works on all three models — both on conventional W101 cotton and on the GOTS W801 organic fibre. Pantone matching for organic farm-shop or NGO brand colours is standard, up to eight spot colours per design. At 100 pieces unit price from €0.80 net per print position. Important for organic branding: we use GOTS-compatible water-based print inks (instead of plastisol with PVC content), which preserves organic consistency. On request: GOTS print certificate in the material-pass PDF.

Embroidery — the long-lasting premium variant

Embroidery on cotton tote bags runs cleanly because the cotton fibre supports the embroidery. Standard size chest position 8 × 8 cm, up to 8,000 stitches on W101 and W801 stable. On W210 Heavy Cotton up to 15,000 stitches because of the higher fabric density. Madeira Classic Rayon thread recommended, Pantone match possible. Premium eco application: subtle embroidery in the brand Pantone colour rather than large-area colourful print.

DTG digital print — for photo motifs and small runs

DTG digital print works particularly well on organic cotton — the GOTS organic fibre takes the pretreatment more evenly than conventional cotton (see also Stanley/Stella vs Gildan). On the W801 EarthAware the print result is sharper and brighter than on the W101. Minimum quantity one piece, price range €4.90 to €7.50 per A4 position with volume tiers.

Volume-tier pricing for Westford Mill organic bags

The volume staircase follows five bands — 25, 50, 100, 250, 500-plus pieces. The strongest discount breaks sit at 100 (–25 %) and 500 pieces (–40 %). The following prices are gross net including single-side print (one-colour screen print or small embroidery), excluding VAT and shipping.

Quantity W101 Bag for Life W801 EarthAware GOTS W210 Heavy Cotton
    25 €4.90 €7.90 €8.90
    50 €3.90 €6.90 €7.90
    100 €3.40 €5.90 €6.90
    250 €3.10 €5.40 €6.40
    500+ €2.90 (quote) €4.90 (quote) €5.90 (quote)

Second print position +€1.90 per piece. Pantone match setup for critical brand colours +€15 one-off. For orders above 500 pieces with framework-contract options on request.

Documenting the organic supply chain — material-pass PDF

Anyone ordering Westford Mill for organic compliance reasons does not order marketing words but a documented supply chain. On request we deliver a material-pass PDF with the order documenting the organic status of the fibre: GOTS certificate number (for W801 EarthAware), BCI cotton status (for W101 Bag for Life), recycled-cotton quota including post-industrial recycling audit (for W210 Heavy Cotton). Plus OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for all three models, plus the Sedex audit report of the tier-1 facilities.

Detail documentation in the organic-cotton guide and recycled-materials guide. For ESG reports and CSR audits these documents are decisive — we deliver them on request within 24 hours.

Use cases for organic cotton bags

Organic farm shop and organic market with reusable concept

Organic farm shops and organic markets typically order 100–500 W101 bags per year in natural or cream finish with screen-printed shop logo. Customer gift above shopping value €30, or sold at the till for €1.50–€2.90 as a reusable-bag concept. For shops with strong organic branding, switch to the W801 EarthAware GOTS variant.

    Climate NGOs and environmental activism

Climate and environmental NGOs (Greenpeace, BUND, WWF section) order the W801 EarthAware as a member welcome pack or as a demo-crew tote. Quantities 200–1,000 pieces per campaign, with screen-printed NGO logo plus optional campaign slogan on the back. Organic fibre is not "nice to have" here, but a brand-consistency question.

Conference goody bag with sustainability ambition

Tech conferences, business conferences and industry events with a sustainability track order the W210 Heavy Cotton as a conference goody-bag container — larger volume (12 litres), heavier load capacity (15 kg) for tablet + notebook + conference materials. Quantities 300–1,000 pieces per event with conference logo plus sustainability-track branding.

    B-Corps and GreenTech companies

B-Corp companies with certified sustainability strategy order the W801 EarthAware as a CSR-compliant employee or customer gift. Quantities 100–500 pieces per quarter as a recruiting welcome pack or customer onboarding gift. Material-pass PDF with GOTS certificate as a mandatory part of the order.

Frequently asked questions on Westford Mill organic cotton bag printing

Which Westford Mill bag is right for our climate NGO?

If your brand claim contains "organic certified" or "GOTS", the W801 EarthAware Organic is the only serious pick — it is GOTS organic certified. If your claim is "robust reusable bag" or "plastic alternative", the W101 Bag for Life is sufficient (conventional cotton, OEKO-TEX certified). If you use recycled material as a USP, the W210 Heavy Cotton with post-industrial recycling is the right pick.

What is the difference between GOTS organic and EarthAware?

EarthAware is Westford Mill's brand label for the GOTS-certified organic line — so not two separate things. "EarthAware" is the internal brand name, "GOTS" the external certificate. The W801 is both: GOTS-certified AND marketed under the EarthAware label. The confusion comes from the fact that Westford Mill also runs a standard W101 line with BCI cotton (Better Cotton Initiative, a pre-stage of organic) that is NOT called EarthAware.

How long does delivery take for 200 W801 GOTS bags with logo?

Standard lead time five to eight working days including finishing and DHL EU shipping. For screen-print finishing: setup day one, print day two to three, drying and shipping day four to six. For embroidery, day two to four extends. Express 48-hour finishing on request (surcharge €1.50 per piece on W801).

How much does a W101 Bag for Life with farm-shop logo cost at 100 pieces?

At 100 pieces including single-side screen print (one colour, 25 × 20 cm logo area): €3.40 net per piece. Plus one-off setup fee €25 per logo plus €30 per print colour. For a one-colour farm-shop logo therefore €340 + €25 + €30 = €395 net plus shipping for the 100 bags. Lead time five to eight working days.

Is GOTS organic worth it or does organic cotton without GOTS suffice?

Depends on the brief. If you write "organic cotton" on a promo tote and find yourself in front of an advertising-law court in a dispute, GOTS is the mandatory minimum certification. For sustainability claims without GOTS backing you face advertising-law risk (see BCI cotton discussion). For eco claims without a hard brand ambition, the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification of the conventional W101 is often sufficient.

    Are Westford Mill bags plastic-free?

Yes, all three main models (W101, W801, W210) are 100 % cotton without plastic components. The carry handles are woven from the same cotton fibre. The embroidery threads are polyester multifilament (de facto plastic) — anyone wanting to stay completely plastic-free should choose screen print with water-based inks rather than embroidery.

Can different models be combined in one volume tier?

Yes. The volume tier applies to the total quantity regardless of model mix. An order with 50× W101 plus 50× W801 plus 50× W210 counts as the 150-piece band — so the 100-piece discount. For several logos per sub-model setup surcharge €25 per additional logo.

How environmentally friendly is DTG print compared to screen print on organic cotton?

Both methods are OEKO-TEX compliant. Screen print with water-based inks is marginally more environmentally friendly than DTG (no pretreatment needed, lower water consumption in the print machine), but the delta is small. On GOTS organic fibre both methods are GOTS-compatible, provided the print inks / pretreatment solutions are GOTS-certified. For strict organic ambition we recommend screen print with water-based GOTS print inks.

Can we embroider or print Pantone brand colours?

Pantone matching in screen print with GOTS-compatible print inks works for 80 % of Pantone Solid Coated colours. Very neon-bright or glitter colours are not available in GOTS organic. In embroidery: Madeira Classic Rayon thread delivers a very good approximation for 90 % of Pantone colours. For critical brand colours a Pantone match mockup before mass production on request.
