About Transfer Printing
Transfer printing is an umbrella term for printing methods in which the motif is not printed directly onto the textile, but first applied to a carrier (paper or film) and then transferred to the fabric using a heat press. The first commercial heat-transfer processes emerged in the 1950s (Star Transfer, dye-sublimation transfer); modern variants include inkjet transfer paper, sublimation, DTF and flex/flock.
Facts:
- Origin: commercial use from ~1950s
- Print principle: print onto carrier + heat-press transfer at 150-200 °C (varies by variant)
- Variants: inkjet transfer paper, sublimation (on polyester), DTF, plastisol transfer, flex/flock
- Durability: 25-50 wash cycles depending on variant
- Materials: cotton, blends, polyester — depending on the variant

What is transfer print?
Transfer print is a two-stage process. In the first step, the motif is printed mirror-inverted onto a coated transfer paper using special ink — depending on the variant with inkjet, laser or plastisol method. In the second step, the printed transfer paper is placed face down on the textile and fixed to the fabric with a heat press at 150-180 °C under pressure for between 15 and 25 seconds. The ink or colour layer separates from the carrier paper and bonds permanently with the fibre. Then the carrier paper is peeled off and the motif remains on the fabric.
There are several transfer variants: classic plastisol transfer for solid-colour motifs, sublimation transfer for polyester (the colour is transferred in gaseous form into the fibre), inkjet transfer for photo motifs on cotton and the modern DTF method (Direct to Film), which is technically also a transfer technology but stands out with particularly brilliant colours and works on any fabric. On this page we focus on classic inkjet and plastisol transfer for small runs.
When is transfer print worthwhile?
Transfer print is ideal when the motif is complex (multiple colours, gradients, photo), the quantity stays small to medium and a simple, fast process is required. Transfer print is suitable for:
- Fabrics — cotton, blends and with special films also polyester. Light fabrics are uncomplicated; dark fabrics need an opaque carrier material.
- Designs — any motifs including photos, gradients and multi-colour illustrations. No technical resolution limits as with screen print.
- Quantities — from 1 piece, ideal up to about 50 pieces. For larger identical runs, DTF print or screen print is cheaper and delivers a better result.
- Applications — birthday photo shirts, hen-party shirts with individual designs per person, school hoodies with class photo, simple promotional shirts for small runs, occasion gifts.
If your order consists of identical motifs in larger quantities, we recommend DTF print or screen print. For pure photo quality on cotton shirts, digital print (DTG) is the best method.
Benefits and limits of transfer print
Benefits:
- From 1 piece — no setup costs, ideal for individual pieces.
- Any designs — photos, gradients, multi-colour illustrations no problem.
- Simple process — fast production time because no screen preparation needed.
- Versatile combination — works on many different fabric types.
- No setup risk — if a motif does not fit, only the transfer paper goes in the bin.
Limits:
- Lower durability — around 25-35 washes, considerably shorter than screen print or embroidery.
- Vinyl look visible — the transfer print is recognisable as a film on the fabric and not as soft as a print embedded in the fibre.
- Sensitive to hot washing — no 60 °C industrial wash, no tumble dryer.
- More effort on dark fabrics — opaque carrier needed, unit prices slightly higher.
- Uneconomical for large runs — from 50 pieces with identical motif there are cheaper alternatives.
Minimum quantity and prices
Transfer print is economical from the first piece. The following indication shows typical unit prices.
| Application | Print area | Unit price (indication) |
|---|---|---|
| Small logo or chest motif | up to A5 | EUR 6-8 per piece |
| Medium front motif | up to A4 | EUR 8-10 per piece |
| Large photo motif front or back | up to A3 | EUR 10-12 per piece |
| Photo shirt with individual image per person | up to A4 | EUR 9-12 per piece |
| Multi-part motif (chest + back + sleeve) | combined | individual quote |
*Indicative prices for inkjet transfer on cotton. Plastisol transfer and sublimation on polyester carry a small surcharge. Please request a specific quote via the enquiry form.

How ShirtStore works
- Choose your product — t-shirt, hoodie or sweater in the configurator.
- Upload your motif — photo, logo or finished design. Resolution at least 300 DPI.
- Set quantity and individual variants — different motif per person possible.
- Print approval and production — we send a mock-up for approval and produce in 5-10 working days.
Transfer print methods — three variants compared
| Method | Carrier material | Suitable for | Min. quantity | Durability | Photo suitability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inkjet transfer | Special paper | Light cotton fabrics (white, beige, light grey) | 1 piece | 25–30 washes | Very good |
| Plastisol transfer | Carrier film | Dark and light fabrics, cotton and polyester | 25 pieces | 35–50 washes | Medium |
| Sublimation transfer | Carrier paper | 100 % polyester only (sports jerseys, hi-vis) | 1 piece | 50+ washes | Very good |
Sublimation on cotton does NOT work — the print disappears after a few washes. On blended fabrics (65/35) sublimation is partially compatible.
Fabric suitability — what works with which transfer?
| Fabric | Inkjet transfer | Plastisol transfer | Sublimation transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 % cotton (light) | ★★★★★ | ★★★★ | no |
| 100 % cotton (dark) | no | ★★★★ | no |
| 65/35 blend | ★★★ | ★★★★ | ★★ (polyester content sublimates) |
| 100 % polyester (light) | no | ★★★ | ★★★★★ |
| 100 % polyester (dark) | no | ★★★★ | no (sublimation does not lighten) |
| Hi-vis polyester | no | ★★★ | ★★★★ |
| Bags (canvas cotton) | ★★★★ | ★★★★ | no |
Configurator workflow — transfer print order in 5 steps
- Check fabric. Cotton light → inkjet transfer (cheap, photo quality). Cotton dark or polyester → plastisol transfer. Sport polyester → sublimation transfer.
- Upload the motif. Pixel file (JPG, PNG, TIF) at 300 DPI at later print size. For photo motifs for individual gifts (hen-do crews with photo per person, family photos): upload one separate file per piece.
- Choose position and size. For standard chest print: 18×18 cm. For back with sponsor strip: 25×8 cm. For hen-do crew shirts with photo per person: usually chest centre 18×18 cm.
- Pre-press sample (optional). For orders from 25 pieces with Pantone brand colour or photo motif with detailed requirements: paid sample €25–40 (credited against main order).
- Approve the order. Digital mock-up before production. For hen-do orders with individual photos: separate mock-up per photo for approval.

What we do better than competitors
- Inkjet transfer with photo personalisation per piece — many competitors reject individual photo orders or charge €5+ surcharge per piece. We accept personalisation even for small crews (5–20 pieces) without surcharge.
- Three transfer methods under one roof — inkjet (light cotton), plastisol (all fabrics), sublimation (polyester). The configurator automatically recommends the right method.
- Pre-press sample service — for orders from 25 pieces with photo motif we deliver pre-press samples for €25–40 (credited against main order). Important for Pantone brand colours.
- Volume ladder from 3 pieces (3 %) — many competitors start the ladder at 10 or 25 pieces.
- EU finishing with short lead time — 5–10 working days standard, express possible. Industry standard often 14+ working days.
